The Invictus

Out of the night that covered us,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank the God who came as thus,
To save my lost and conquered soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
He has not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
His head was bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this cross of wrath and tears
Blooms but the wonder of the Light,
Despite the menace of the years,
He makes a future for the bride.

Gone is the horror of the shade,
Expelled and conquered is the night.
No more reason to be afraid,
He is the unconquerable Light.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
He is the master of my fate,
He is the captain of my soul.
